Collins or Ultralingua? It all depends...

The Collins and Ultralingua dictionaries use very similar technology, so choosing between the two can be a real head-scratcher. The good news: there is no wrong choice.

Here is our quick evaluation of the principal differences, but feel free to download evaluation copies of each to see which you prefer. (At present, users cannot mix Ultralingua and Collins modules in the same interface.)

QUALITY: Both Collins and Ultralingua include high quality contents. Collins dictionaries are carefully edited for ready access to the most important words and expressions, complete with cultural notes. In most cases Ultralingua dictionaries contain more entries than Collins, but in some cases have fewer notes on usage or contextual information. Only Ultralingua offers extensive grammar references and sample correspondence (for English, French, German, Spanish).
DICTIONARY DATA: Collins and Ultralingua offer a different, but overlapping, selection of dictionaries. In bilingual dictionaries, Collins is currently available only for French-English, Spanish-English, and German-English, while Ultralingua offers many more. Under the Collins brand you will find the COBUILD dictionary for ESL learners. The Ultralingua English dictionary privileges American English, while Collins privileges British.
TECHNOLOGY: Ultralingua and Collins use the same basic technology, but Ultralingua offers some extra features on certain platforms. On Windows, for example, Ultralingua includes browse mode and our trademark reverse translation window; Ultralingua also offers one-click access to online full-text translation tools.
Currently only Collins dictionaries are available for the Symbian OS.
PRICING: Collins and Ultralingua dictionaries are priced the same, at $29.95 (or the equivalent in other currencies) per module.
Note that Collins offers an extensive English Thesaurus as a separate module; Ultralingua's English Thesaurus, somewhat less extensive, is included with the English Dictionary.
