FAQ: Installation
I get a "certificate error" when I try to install the Symbian version.
Some Symbian phones (especially Enterprise Edition phones, such as Nokia E50/E60/E61/E61i/E62/E65/E70/E90) are often set to accept only Symbian Signed applications. If that is the case with yours, you will need to turn that setting off.
Each phone is a bit different, but a good visual guide can be found at
- Click the application button
- Go to the Tools menu
- Choose the Application Manager (app. mgr)
- Choose Options
- Choose Settings
- Choose the first setting: "Software installation".
- Select "All" rather than "Signed only".
How do I install the Palm version?
Many people have difficulties installing large databases on Palm devices. The comments we provide are meant to guide you, but installation of software is a Palm (or Palm compatible) issue; it is not a problem with our software. Your best resource here is your Palm or Palm compatible documentation. Further suggestions:
- You need to use your hotsync software to install files. From the Palm Desktop software, you may have a Hotsync menu with an "Install files option"; otherwise, look for an "Install" application (Windows, especially) in your Palm folder.
- You need to copy at least TWO files onto your device: the Ultralingua.prc program, and a language database. (If you add more than one language, you will add more databases.) Make sure you have enough room on your Palm. If you do NOT have enough room, try downloading the "compact" versions available for some dictionaries, from http://www.ultralingua.com/en/download.html.
- You may install the databases on a VFS card (memory card, memory stick, SD card, etc.). Most hotsync software will allow you to choose the card as a "destination" when you use the Install files program. Otherwise, you may load the files onto the device, and then copy them to the VFS card using the copy menu from the home screen of your Palm. Files should be in the /Palm/ or /Palm/Launcher/ directory.
- If you get repeated incomplete installations of databases, you can try augmenting the memory of your conduit manager (if you are under Mac Classic). Otherwise, contact your Palm (or compatible) support.
Macintosh & Windows: Message indicating no dictionaries are installed?
You must not move the contents of the Ultralingua folder; otherwise, Ultralingua may not be able to find various files. Also, if you wish to access Ultralingua on Mac OS X via services (command-shift-E), the Ultralingua folder MUST be in the applications folder.
If you have several versions of Ultralingua on your hard disk, the operating system may not know which version to launch. You should delete all but the most recent copy, and make sure that all your dictionary databases (including personal additions files) are located in the Ultralingua/dictionaries folder.
Having multiple copies on your disk may also mean your aliases or Dock icon will launch the wrong version. If this is the case, delete the alias or icon and make a new one from the application in the Ultralingua folder.
How can I import, export, or update personal additions files?
How can I import, export, or update personal additions files?
If you have developed personal additions files, you may need to update their format in order for them to work with later versions of Ultralingua applications. You may also wish to import text files into personal additions modules, export personal additions to text, or convert files between Mac or Windows format (".uld") and Palm format (".pdb").
All this can be done on our builder page.
NOTE: you cannot convert or export files OTHER than personal additions. Also, you cannot convert or export files larger than 400K. For special needs, contact us.
How to update a Mac OS X version?
Ultralingua does not use automatic installers, following Apple's application guidelines. Instead, products are downloaded as simple disk images (.dmg files).
You need to have administrator access to your system (an administrator password) to make changes to your system.
Recommended steps for handling an update of Ultralingua software:
- If you have added personal entries to Ultralingua, open the "dictionaries" folder in the "Ultralingua" folder, and copy your additions files (xx-xx-additions.uld, where "xx" indicates the languages involved) to your desktop
- Make sure you have quit Ultralingua; then drag the Ultralingua folder to the trash, as well as any alias or dock icon
- Download the new version of Ultralingua from our downloads page
- Copy the new Ultralingua folder to your Applications folder
- Add your additions files (xx-xx-additions.uld) back to the "dictionaries" folder
- Create a new alias or dock icon (if you wish)
