Building Codes

Building codes (AmE) Statutory codes enacted by municipalities for the purpose of safeguarding the public’s safety and health through the regulation of building construction, building use, and maintenance, and through the installation of certain types of services. The codes include building codes, health and sanitary codes, fire codes, plumbing codes, electrical codes, mechanical codes and housing codes. The codes set forth in great detail the minimum standards to be adopted by the builder, architect and engineer.

Building permits Possession of a permit is required before construction can begin, and later for use and occupancy. Municipal supervision is insured. Further, the issue of a permit usually involves the filing of a suitable bond.

Construction permit Permit required for the erection, alteration, or extension of a structure.

Dean of Guild Court (ScE) Court that regulated building in a Scottish burgh.
