Lopez affair Efrain Lopez, a 35-year-old civil servant who had left the Roman Catholic priesthood and asked Rome for a release from his priestly vows, married Frances Lopez, a schoolteacher, 23 June 1972. Though the Vatican's formal reply had not yet arrived, it came six months later, and a priest presided at the couple's wedding. Twenty years, two children and several failed business ventures later, Lopez decided to return to the priesthood. He divorced his wife, who was earning $22,000 a year, and told the judge that he could not afford to pay alimony on a church salary. Vatican approved Lopez's reinstatement as a priest, becoming an acting pastor of a parish in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where some members are under the impression that he is a widower.
