Rolling Stock

Rolling stock Collective name for all the running equipment of a railway company; that is, locomotives, freight vehicles and passenger cars.

  1. Wooden stock Rolling stock in which a large part of its construction is wood, especially in 19th cent.
  2. Steel-car revolution Change from wooden stock to steel which began in 1890 when the cost of steel declined and steelworking tools became more common, especially advent of air-powered tools.

Non-revenue equipment Rolling stock that does not produce revenue such as cabooses or maintenance of way cars.

  1. Office car (Business car) (AmE) Non-revenue car used by company officials while on inspection tour of a line.
