Goal-oriented infinitive clauses:
The construction um...zu is used to express a goal (in order to). Example sentences:
- Bettina arbeitet, um Geld zu verdienen, aber auch, um Kontakt zu anderen Menschen zu haben. (Bettina works to earn money, but also to have contact with other people.)
- Du solltest zum Arzt gehen, um dich untersuchen zu lassen. (You should go to a doctor to have yourself checked.)
- Ich bin hier, um mich für den Kurs anzumelden. (I am here to sign up for the class.).
- Markus treibt Sport, um fit zu bleiben. (Markus plays sports to remain fit.)
