Modal verbs
The German modal verbs are können (can), wollen (want), müssen (must), dürfen (may), and sollen (should). These verbs are usually used with another verb that remains in the infinitive form. While the plural forms of modal verbs are regular, the singular forms have changed vowels (except for sollen) and irregular endings. Examples:
- Ihr könnt singen. (You guys can sing.)
- Du kannst singen. (You can sing.)
The modal verbs können, wollen, müssen, dürfen
- ich: kann, will, muss, darf
- du: kannst, willst, musst, darfst
- er / sie / es: kann, will, muss, darf
- wir: können, wollen, müssen, dürfen
- ihr: könnt, wollt, müsst, dürft
- sie / Sie: können, wollen, müssen, dürfen
Modal verbs expressing various forms of probability and subjectivity
The secondary function model verbs is to express various forms and degrees of probability. Example sentences:
- Er soll ein fantastischer Musiker sein. (He is said to be a fantastic musician.)
- Es soll noch ein weiteres Erdbeben gegeben haben. (There's supposed to have been another earthquake.)
- Er will ein fantastischer Musiker sein. (He claims to be a fantastical musician.)
- Sie müsste jetzt so um die Vierzig sein. (She must be around fourty now.)
- Sie dürfte so um die Vierzig sein. (She is probably around fourty.)
