Commas:
Commas are used between individual items in lists, but not before the und (and) or the oder (or) that precedes the last item in a list. Example sentences:
- Für den Obstsalat haben wir Äpfel, Birnen, Bananen, Kiwis und Erdbeeren gekauft. (We bought apples, pears, bananas, kiwis, and strawberries for the fruit salad.)
- Gefällt dir der Wagen in schwarz, weiß, blau oder rot? (Do you like the car in black, white, blue, or red?)
Commas always separate a main clause from a dependant clause, a relative clause, or an indirect question. Example sentences:
- Ich kann verstehen, dass du nicht mitkommen möchtest. (I can understand that you don't want to come along.)
- Das ist die CD, die ich mir gekauft habe. (That's the CD I bought.)
- Die CD, die ich mir gekauft habe, ist toll. (The CD I bought is great.)
- Ich verstehe nicht, warum du nicht mitkommen möchtest. (I don't understand why you don't want to come along.)
Appositives and other extended descriptions are separated by commas. Example sentences:
- Mozart, der berühmte österreichische Komponist, schrieb mit elf Jahren seine erste Oper. (Mozart, the famous Austrian composer, wrote his first opera at eleven.)
- Mozart, 1756 in Salzburg geboren, starb 1791 in Wien (Born in 1756 in Salzburg, Mozart died in Vienna in 1791.)
Commas between two main clauses or a main clause and an extended infinitive construction are optional. Example sentnces:
- Mein Freund fährt gern Fahrrad(,) aber ich fahre lieber mit dem Auto. (My friend likes to ride his bike, but I prefer to go by car.)
- Hast du Lust(,) heute Abend mit mir ins Konzert zu gehen? (Do you feel like going to a concert with me tonight?)
