Reflexive verbs

Reflexive verbs

Many verbs may be conjugated with reflexive or reciprocal pronouns. In this case, the pronoun (me, te, se, nos, os, se) changes to reflect the subject of the verb.

  • Yo me lavo. [I wash (myself).]
  • Levántate. [Get (yourself) up.]
  • Jorge se afeita por la mañana. [Jorge shaves (himself) in the morning.]
  • Nostros nos bañamos por la tarde. [We bathe (ourselves) in the afternoon.]
  • ¿Os divertáis? (Are you enjoying yourselves?)
  • Ellos se miran en el espejo. (They look at themselves in the mirror)

Some reflexive verbs, however, use pronouns that do not as obviously reflect back to the subject. Among these verbs are atreverse a (to dare), burlarse de (to make fun of), fijarse en (to notice), acordarse de (to remember), quejarse de (to complain about), etc.
