Keeping Up With the Mountain Lions

With Apple's upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion, we are updating our Mac Software to have Mountain Lion compatibility. Version 7.3.2 for the Mac App Store will be available soon!

Along with Mountain Lion compatibility, this new version also includes

  • Minor bug fixes with VoiceOver
  • Button next to language drop-down menu to make switching search directions easier
  • Ability to immediately search by typing upon launch of the app

You can find this update for the Mac App Store under the updates badge when it’s ready.

Thinking about buying our Mac software but not sure whether to buy the Mac App Store product or the website version? Read our Mac App Store FAQ to learn about the differences and benefits (like deeper discounts!) of the different products.

Learn Esperanto, See the World: Interview with Bill Chapman and Esperanto for iOS

For Ultralingua user Bill Chapman, not knowing a country's common language doesn't stop him from going there. Bill has traveled to several countries in Africa, South America, and Europe using the language Esperanto to help him find places to stay and things to do.

Bill learned Esperanto at age seventeen out of a curiosity about how people in other areas, under different political regimes, lived. And his curiosity paid off. Throughout his travels, Bill has been able to engage in local culture in a way he wouldn't have been able to without speaking a common language. Read Bill's story in our interview with him and get Bill's advice on how to learn Esperanto and how to find other Esperanto speakers around the world.

If Bill's story inspires you to learn Esperanto or to use your Esperanto skills on your travels, Ultralingua has great news! Our popular Esperanto dictionary is now available for iPhone and iPad. Perfect for traveling, our Esperanto App has nearly all of the same functions as the Mac and Windows versions:

  • 30,000 entries with 50,000 translations
  • Parts of speech
  • Geographic vocabulary and other proper nouns
  • Some example phrases, idioms, and expressions
  • Hundreds of grammar and usage explanation notes

Read Bill Chapman's interview on our blog and find the Esperanto App in the iTunes App Store.

A Paternity Test of the French Language

To celebrate the French National Day (or Bastille Day) this Saturday, our French language specialist Herman gave us a little history lesson about the Gauls and their part in the birth and evolution of the French language.

Herman talks about the benefits of placing the French language within a historical context. He also talks about how the life cycle of a language is pretty similar to the life cycle of a human, with one major difference. While people have one father, languages can sometimes have several fathers, hence Herman's paternity test.

Read about the "first father," the Gauls, and stay tuned for the rest of the his series on the birth and evolution of the French language to find out who the other fathers are! (We’ll give you a hint, the Franks are among them.)

Tools To Try: Proloquo2Go 2.0

Ultralingua and Apple aren't the only ones making updates to their products. Our friends at Assistiveware have recently released a major update to their award-winning Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, Proloquo2Go. Proloquo2Go is an app that helps children with communication disabilities communicate with their family, friends, and teachers.

Proloquo2go

This app uses Ultralingua technology for multilingual support and sentence construction.

The new version, Proloquo2Go 2.0, includes new features like paging buttons for children who cannot swipe, multiuser support, and two new vocabularies of basic communication and core words. In addition to these new features, Proloquo2Go 2.0 also has two real childrens' voices, Rosie and Harry.

With real voice recordings, children who use Proloquo2Go 2.0 will be able to relate to their peers even more. You can watch Rosie and Harry's heart warming experience of recording their voices here.
